Chihuahua

A Chihuahua dog is the most lovable, adorable and hugable pet in the world. A well balanced Chihuahua should not exceed 6 pounds in weight.

The the teacup Chihuahua history might remain somewhat of a mystery, especially as to how they ended up where they were first discovered as a breed in 1884 and adopted into the AKC twenty years later. Because of the Chihuahua’s exposure in movies and television, the Chihuahua began one of the most meteoric rises in numbers of any breed in American Kennel Club history. As Chihuahuas are featured in more and more films, television shows and become the beloved pets of an ever growing list of the rich and famous, we should all remember that they are more then just the hot breed of the moment.

There are two types of Chihuahuas that are identical except for coat length, the short-haired and the long-haired with the short-haired being the more popular as evidenced by all of the appearances in television and movies. Chihuahuas come in two coat types: Smooth coat and the less familiar long coat. A couple of words of advice if you decide to get yourself a teacup chihuahua is to invest in a coat for your dog.

Training your Chihuahua can be difficult but with patience, love, and consistency do well. They respond best to positive reinforcement. Chihuahuas can be house trained by either the crate method or the paper training method.

Early, extensive, and intensive socialization is an absolute must for this breed.

Temperament The Chihuahua is a graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with a saucy expression and terrier-like qualities of temperament. They are feisty little dogs.
