If you're looking for a dog or puppy, in my opinion the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the best. Yes, because I have one. He is my Rusty Dog. Lets talk a little bit about the breed.
The size of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 12 to 13 inches in height and their weight should be around 13 to 18 pounds. My Rusty Dog is around 23 pounds so he is a little over weight. The vet says his weight is okay, but they are lap dogs and Rusty is always on my lap so to me he is a little heavy. He does get plenty of exercise even though when I go to take him for a walk he runs to the car. Yes, he would rather go for a car ride. Quite honestly there are times when we do go for a car ride because I don't feel like walking.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel loves people. If you are looking for a guard dog this is not the breed for you. My cat Spooky is meaner than my dog. People come in and Rusty runs to say hello, while my cat Spooky attacks people. She's a crazy cat.
Grooming the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a vital part of care. Their hair is fairly long and it must be brushed everday. Their ears are long, they are prone to ear mights and their ears get into their water and food. Keep those ears clean.
Cavalier King Charles have a variety of colors: Blenheim - chestnut and white. Tri-Color - jet black markings and pearly white. They also have rich tan markings above their eyes. Ruby - one color which is rich red. The Black and Tan - jet black with bright tan markings over the eyes.
The Cavalier King Charles temperment is just outstanding. They are gay, friendly and non-agressive. They love to please their masters so they are easily trainable. They love to be around people and/or other dogs. They are good with older children, but as with any dog, if you have young children they must be watched.
If you are looking for a small lap dog then I highly recommend this breed. If your looking for a guard dog I would suggest to go with a different breed.
